The Kotagiri Public School is a Christian, Co-educational, Residential, English Medium School imparting full, liberal and comprehensive education. Established in 1971, it is the first of many schools run by B.A.M.E Trust.

‘The Lawrence Asylum’ was built as a memorial to Major General Sir Henry Montgomery Lawrence, Queen Victoria, KCB, who early in 1856, offered a sum of Rs.5,000 down and per annum if action were taken to found, at some Madras hill-station, an Asylum similar to those already established at Sanawar and Mount Abu. In February of 1856, a Meeting was held in Ootacamund to make every effort to carry out the project. From the beginning, difficulty arose as to the religious principles to be inculcated at the Institution.

Established in 1858, during British rule, the school was initially founded to provide education for the children of British soldiers. Over the years, the school evolved and expanded its scope to include all students.
