Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Kerala Kendra was initiated in accordance with a suggestion made by the Late. Dr. K. M. Munshi in a letter to M. K. K. Nayar Chairman, FACT, Cochin. On 1st June 1977, a primary School was started at shipyard premises under the auspices of Vice Admiral N Krishnan, Chairman and Managing Director, CSL. A Parent-Teacher Association started functioning the same year under the able leadership of Sri. Ramji.
Initially the school started with Standard I and II comprising 81 students and 4 teachers. The school has grown further and now includes classes from Standard I to XII. The first batch of Std X students passed out in 1986 and Standard XII passed out in 1994 achieving cent percent results.
Shifting of Premises
In 1980 we shifted to the present premises, Bhavan’s Vidya Mandir, Girinagar. The foundation stone was laid by Sri. E. Sreedharan, Chariman and Managing Director of CSL, on 10th April 1980. The School building was inaugurated by Sri. V. BalaKrishna Eradi Chief Justice of Kerala on 4th July 1980.
The Growth
The regular functioning of the school began from 7th July 1980 under the new management comprising Justice T. L. Viswnatha Iyer, Chairman, BVB Kochi Kendra, Dr. Sreekumar, Hon. Secretary, and Sri. Vasudevan, Registrar.
Under the rules and regulations of CBSE, Extra Curricular activities were also initiated alongside academic subjects. Dance, Music, Work Experience (SUPW was introduce including cooking, sewing, craft etc.) and P.T. classes were introduced. In 1980 The School library started functioning with Smt. Devaki as the librarian.
The GCDA Chairman, Sri. Paul P Mani (Former Minster) paid a visit to our school and inaugurated the sports meet. A mega sports event has been introduced involving all the CBSE schools of Kerala in memory of Dr. K.M. Munshiji, named Dr. K.M. Munshi Memorial Athletic Meet. The first meet was held on February 11, 1984 in which our school bagged 69 points and secured the IV place.
The school has been visited by eminent personalities which include His Holiness Swami Chinmayananda, Shri. Premachandran, (who represented India in Asiad in 1982) , Malayalam poet Sri. Kunjunni Master, Cine Artist Sri. Mohanlal and Sri. A P J Abdul Kalam.
Two of our students, Arathi P Nair of Standard. V and Sudhindran of Standard. VIII had the privilege of meeting the President of India, Gyani Zail Singh on his visit to Kochi. Their interaction with him was impressive and received rare review by the press.
Our students have excelled in various fields. They have been selected for IITs, bagged prizes for quizzes, sports, music, recognized for scholarship programmes and other inter-school and national events.
