Guntur is a coastal district of Andhra Pradesh, where the seeds of residential education was first sown in private sector in the 1970's and 80's as students from all parts of the state flooded the town, and residential schools and colleges were set up by private agencies and trusts. The city saw a boom of such institutions while there was little happening in the education in rural areas. Under these cicumstances, the establishment of Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, Maddirala in 1987 with the objective to provide good quality modern education to gifted rural students and to keep them abreast with the latest trends in education proved a turning point for education in the rural sector. This stupendous task was carried out remarkably well by successive Principals and Staff of the Vidyalaya placing it among the best educational institutions of the district. Ever since its inception, the Vidyalaya has been making relentless efforts to uplift the Vidyalaya to the level of the best schools of the region.
The Vidyalaya has a commendable record of excellent results in the Board examinations. Among the assets of he Vidyalaya are its Samsung Smart classrooms(two), three LED TVs and a separate computer lab, all of which have internet connectivity. These provide a great platform for teaching-learning activities and are highly beneficial in enhancing the quality of education imparted by the Vidyalaya. There are active NCC units for boys and girls and Bharat Scout and Guide units. Regular activities are carried out by these units. Subject committee meetings and Club activities are conducted regularly to strengthen academic performance, scientific attitude and literary skills of the students. The Vidyalaya hosts VMC and VAC meetings every academic year as per norms (one each normally). The Swachh Bharath activities are also carried out with great enthusiasm.
The Vidyalaya is functioning at the permanent site in 30 acres of land near Maddirala Village, 8 km away from Chilakaluripet town, which in turn is 40 km away from district head quarters Guntur. The Vidyalaya was established during the session 1987-1988. Late Sri Sadineni Chowdaraiah, Chairman of Dhanalakshmi Group of Industries donated the 30-Acres of land for the Vidyalaya. The school started functioning at the temporary site in the buildings of Sri Sadineni Chowdaraiah College provided by donor Sri Sadineni Chowdariah. The Vidyalaya shifted to permanent buildings constructed under phase I in the year 1991. The buildings constructed under phase II were occupied in October 1992. Two (2) boys' dormitories, one (1)girls' dormitory and an additional dining hall were added later on.
