Chandigarh Orthodox Syrian Church Society: Embracing Tradition, Empowering Communities
The Chandigarh Orthodox Church, an integral part of the Indian Orthodox Church, stands proudly among the world’s oldest churches. Its roots trace back to the arrival of St. Thomas, a disciple of Jesus Christ, in AD 52 in Kerala. Headquartered in Kottayam, Kerala, the church is led by His Holiness Moran Mar Baselios Marthoma Paulose-II, the Supreme Head. The region falls under the Diocese of Delhi, with our diocesan Bishop, His Grace Dr. Yuhannon Mar Demetrios, serving as our Metropolitan.
Recognizing the importance of social and intellectual development, the church has taken the initiative to establish educational institutions. The Indian Orthodox Church, boasting a legacy of more than 600 schools nationwide, extends its impact through colleges, engineering institutions, teachers training colleges, and more. These institutions, spread across various regions, uphold a commitment to delivering quality education.
Within the northern region under the Delhi headquarters, the church proudly operates esteemed schools in Delhi, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan. St. Mary’s School, Chandigarh, stands as a testament to the church’s dedication, being the first school of the Indian Orthodox Church in the Punjab region.
